Australia & New Zealand: A Journey Across the World to Reconnect with Friends

Sometimes the most meaningful journeys begin with the people we meet along the way.

For Sharon and Richard, this month-long adventure to Australia and New Zealand was inspired by friendships formed years earlier while traveling in Europe. After meeting an Australian couple abroad and staying connected over the years, they decided it was finally time to make the journey across the world to reconnect in person.

What unfolded was an unforgettable 32-day exploration of New Zealand and Australia, combining breathtaking scenery, exceptional food and wine, unique wildlife encounters, and meaningful time spent with friends. Their itinerary took them from Christchurch and Queenstown to the tropical wonders of Cairns, the remote landscapes of the Northern Territory, the vineyards of South Australia, and finally Sydney, where they enjoyed several days reconnecting with the friends who inspired the trip in the first place.

In New Zealand, they experienced the dramatic beauty of Arthur's Pass, cruised through Milford Sound, and sampled wines in Central Otago. In Australia, they explored the Great Barrier Reef, ventured into the ancient Daintree Rainforest, discovered Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks, encountered wildlife on Kangaroo Island, and enjoyed food and wine experiences throughout Adelaide and the Barossa Valley. One experience, however, stood above the rest.

As Sharon shared afterward:

"One of our favorites was the train ride 'The Ghan'. It was amazing!"

Their journey aboard The Ghan delivered a classic Australian rail experience through the heart of the Outback, connecting Darwin and Adelaide while showcasing some of the country's most remote and fascinating landscapes.

Despite the complexity of coordinating flights, hotels, touring, rail journeys, and independent travel over such a long distance, Sharon and Richard were able to simply enjoy the experience knowing every detail had been carefully arranged in advance.

The couple praised the accommodations throughout the trip, noting that each property was clean, comfortable, and located in safe, convenient areas. They were equally impressed by the local cuisine, describing the food throughout Australia and New Zealand as diverse, memorable, and exceptional.

Looking back, what stood out most was how effortlessly the entire experience came together.

"It was the most amazing trip! We were a little nervous going so far and long, knowing we were not in a group tour, but this was far better. It was beyond our expectations."

From alpine landscapes and world-class wine regions to tropical reefs, iconic rail journeys, and treasured reunions with friends, Sharon and Richard's adventure was proof that some bucket-list journeys are worth every mile.

And like many great trips, it left them with one final thought:

They can't wait to go back.
